Experience a rare Total Solar Eclipse in the South Orkney Islands on an expedition cruise to Antarctica.

In December 2021, you’ll have a rare opportunity to make a total solar eclipse the crowning touch on a remarkable polar adventure that includes setting foot on Antarctica itself. Join us aboard Hurtigruten’s state-of-the-art ms Roald Amundsen, for 18 unforgettable days sailing across oceans full of icebergs, whales, awe, and wonder.

Early summer morning in the South Orkneys means the Sun will be low on the horizon, having barely set during the night. Provided skies are clear, you’ll observe the eclipse from beginning to end, with totality lasting 60+ seconds. After observing the Solar Eclipse (we hope!), we aim to explore the South Orkney Islands themselves, attempting to navigate a route through the area’s icebergs, sea ice, and occasional mist, and weather permitting allowing you to participate in landings ashore and other activities.

Hurtigruten’s Expedition Team will lead ice-cruising and landings at every opportunity to come ashore and explore the monumental Antarctic scenery. Our hybrid-power ship, the Roald Amundsen, will take you as close as possible to Antarctic wildlife and untouched wilderness. The ship will attempt landings at several sites in the South Shetland islands and on the Antarctic Peninsula aiming to bring you to the incredible diversity of landscapes and rich wildlife seen in this pristine wilderness.

Each landing is designed to create unforgettable memories. Of course, this is true wilderness, so nature is in charge, and your experienced captain will work with the elements to create the best possible itinerary for your exploration.
