DANUBE RIVER • NOVEMBER 29th – DECEMBER 12th, 2020

CRUISE THE DANUBE RIVER

Treat yourself to a few of your favorite things as you visit Central Europe and the Christmas markets of the Danube with Times Journeys. We’ll discuss domestic and international affairs and glide up the Danube, immersing ourselves in the distinctive cultures of Hungary, Austria, and Germany. Cruising east to west, get an eye-level view of life along the Danube, a vital waterway since Roman times. Sail past the developed waterfronts of capitol cities and the quiet hum of traditional villages. Explore the cities and towns along the Danube on foot, taking AMA Waterways’ complementary morning walking tour in our ports.

Budapest offers imperial architecture and Hungary’s distinctive Magyar cultural elements. Bratislava shows visitors a great medieval old town and many echoes of the substantial Jewish community who lived there before WWII. See the formal Habsburg influence in Vienna right alongside Art Nouveau treasures. Heading into the UNESCO World Heritage Wachau Valley, Times Journeys guests will have an enhanced visit to Melk Abbey, a Baroque gem. Gliding in to Linz we enter “Sound of Music” territory. Based in Linz, Times Journeys guests will drive to Salzburg for an exclusive exploration of the city of Mozart (and the Trapp family). Crossing the border from Austria into Germany, learn about Passau’s Baroque and Gothic architecture before heading to Vilshofen, our final port.

All along the way we’ll visit the Danube’s Christmas markets (SLIDE SHOW). Get a sense of the common threads and regional differences between the markets. See the emphasis on the Advent season, ubiquitous twinkling lights, mulled wine, gingerbread, and high spirits everywhere. Take a closer look and sample each market’s signatures: guaranteed handmade crafts, goulash, and strudel in Budapest; glorious food, “fruit spirits”, chimney cakes, latkes, mead, and carved wood in Bratislava; ice skating in Vienna; wine, music, and roasted chestnuts in Salzburg; pottery, glass ornaments, and Linzer torte in Linz; and snowflake ornaments, wooden toys, and creches in Passau. Our cruise is a festive, homey event at a dark season of year; a great opportunity to experience the differences in neighboring cultures, and yes, a chance to nibble your way across the Danube basin at a time when indulgence is a civic responsibility. Please join Times Journeys in a celebration of life and light!
