Today we visit the colonial city of Trinidad, a UNESCO World Heritage Site encompassing historic, architectural, and cultural aspects of Cuban heritage. Trinidad flourished with the 18th and 19th century sugar industry, and you’ll see evidence of that in the mingling of colorful buildings with Moorish, Andalucian, or Neoclassical influences near Plaza Mayor. Trinidad is key in Cuba’s current cigar industry. The group will lunch at El Colonial. Our exploration of Trinidad continues as we meet local entrepreneurs, the owners of El Alfarero Casa de Chi-Chi to learn about the issues involved in operating a small private-sector business in Cuba. Later, a walking tour will educate our eyes to the characteristic streets, lanes, and plazas of this historic town. Back in Cienfuegos, you have the evening at leisure. (B, L)
