Kodiak’s indigenous Alutiiq people have a 7,500-year history on the island. They’ve seen the Russian Empire come and go, and witnessed the impact of commercial fishing, World War II, a tsunami, and the growth of the island’s population. You can learn about Kodiak’s history at the Alutiiq Museum & Archaeological Repository. Many visitors choose to spend a memorable day outside of town amidst the island’s noted flora and fauna in hopes of glimpsing Kodiak bears.
