Kanazawa has a modern back story, but your visit to the city will probably center on the old ways. One of Japan’s few surviving castle towns, you can explore its castle and related features. Kenrokuen, one of the castle’s gardens, is considered to be one of Japan’s three finest. Kanazawa’s labyrinthine old town has a notable samurai district, and the adventuresome may want to make a reservation and tour the mysterious Temple of the Ninja (Myoryuji Temple) with its hidden rooms, trap doors, and strategic architecture.
