A day in Hilo poses a dilemma. Reasonable people may differ in their Hilo plans. Some will take in science and culture at Imiloa Astronomy Center, which highlights the Big Island’s telescopes and Polynesian celestial navigation. Local botanical gardens showcase island flora. Many Hilo visitors, though, will head south to Volcanoes National Park to visit two very active and accessible volcanoes, Kilauea and Mauna Loa, spending a day exploring lava flows and tubes and tree fern forests.
