At Abydos, we’ll visit the cult center for Osiris, the god of the underworld. The cenotaph (commemorative monument) there of Seti I (son of Ramses II, btw) is noted for the colorful and delicate reliefs (seen in the slide show at right; all photos taken by Neil Bauman, May of 2024) set in its chapels. Probably more importantly, in this temple is the most complete heiroglyphic King list in Egypt.

Sohag (where we’ll dock the night before or after our visit to Abydos) was one of Egypt’s earliest inhabited settlements, and its locale is thought to be the birthplace of Narmer, a prince who founded Egypt by “uniting” (i.e., conquering) both Upper and Lower Kingdoms creating the nation of Egypt (circa ~3100 BCE).
